01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A stone-paved approach tucked down a Koenji side street leads to iiiio koenji, a bistro with a calm, understated presence. Renovated from a traditional Japanese house with modern touches, the interior offers an inviting dining space fitted with counter seating and sunken kotatsu seating on a raised floor.
Charcoal-grilled meats take centre stage on the menu. Thigh cuts of Hokkaido Yezo sika deer emerge tender and moist, displaying a pure, clean lean flavour, while lean Wagyu rump receives an equally attentive grilling to bring out the natural depth of the meat. Accompanying root vegetables and pumpkin retain their fresh sweetness, building thoughtful layers of flavour across each plate.
An inventive approach extends across the small plates and starters. Offerings highlight thoughtful pairings, such as a mushroom salad celebrating aroma and texture, scallop cutlets paired with beetroot sauce, and Pacific saury confit cooked gently at low temperature until tender. Diners can also opt for pasta dishes such as a chilled carbonara, memorable for its unexpected texture and rich, savoury depth.
The beverage selection leans heavily towards natural wines, with a broad variety available by the glass so guests can sample across different bottles. Between craft beer on pour and a house-made pudding to finish, dinner can unfold comfortably at your own rhythm.
Booking ahead for dinner is advisable. The bistro suits a quiet evening spent solo just as naturally as a relaxed meal shared over unhurried conversation.
